Pine RidgeThe Pine Ridge site was the second learning camp formed as the result of the Baltimore / Dakota Presbytery partnership and is in its' third year serving the children of Pine Ridge. Pine Ridge is located in the Southwest corner of South Dakota on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. Camp takes place at the Pine Ridge Presbyterian Church which is located in the center of town and is within walking distance for many children. The learning camp serves youth three to twelve years of age. The hours of camp are Monday through Friday from nine o'clock in the morning to one o'clock in the afternoon. The camp is staffed by adults and youth (youth must be entering eleventh grade) and bring with them many varied abilities and talents to share with the children of Pine Ridge. Our goal at Pine Ridge is to offer children opportunities to learn in a fun, hands-on setting. The theme for this years' camp is "Water" and art, math, sports, music, drama, science, technology and language arts learning centers will be offered to children that will focus around this theme. Camp staff will facilitate each center while other staff members will accompany children through the various activities. In addition, camp staff will serve breakfast and lunch to the children. At the conclusion of each camp day, children can choose several books to take home. In addition to the learning camp that is held in the church building, camp staff assist in a "drop-in" program that is held weekday afternoons in the Pine Ridge Retreat Center. This program is a year round program that provides a safe place for children after school and during the summer months. Board games, jump-rope, ping pong are a few of the activities offered at this site. The Pine Ridge Retreat Center is located next door to the Pine Ridge Presbyterian Church. A resident minister is the director of this center. In addition to the drop-in program and other services offered to the people of Pine Ridge the center offers accommodations to various groups visiting Pine Ridge and can accommodate approximately sixteen lodgers. The Pine Ridge Hau Kola Learning Camp provides many opportunities for personal growth. Serving others, sharing God-given talents and gifts, learning about a new culture, forming new friendships are all experiences that will last a lifetime.
