Sisseton
2008 After Action Report
Our newest Hau Koda Learning Camp was held on the Lake Traverse Reservation in North East South Dakota. The camp was held at the Good Will Presbyterian Church in Agency Village, SD and the staff was housed in Sisseton, SD at local motels.
The staff was small in number with only 9 members - 4 teens and 5 adults. The original plan was to have the camp at the Mission Center in Sisseton, but the center needed a lot of repairing and cleaning, so the staff worked with our partners from Sisseton in the Mission Center for two of our days. When the staff found the Good Will Church had been newly painted and carpeted, the camp site was moved there. The church was an excellent layout for our first camp, and even though we only had camp for three days, the staff all agreed that it was a good first camp experience for everyone. The campers had breakfast and lunch each day along with the Reading/Book Nook, Technology and Art stations. The entire camp had a Games/Recreation time before lunch each day.
The plans for 2009 are to increase the staff size to 16, have camp for four days and add a Math Station to the already existing stations. The staff will start their week in Sisseton by attending the Sisseton-Wahpeton Oyate Powwow. A Hau Koda Committee is already in place with members of the Good Will and Ascension Churches having volunteered to work with the Baltimore leadership to build this new camp. There are youth members on the committee as we are seeking to have a Counselor In Training component with our Sisseton Hau Koda Learning Camp.
