Cultural Exchange

During the 2005 Hau Kola Learning Camps, the Steering Committee began to engage Native American artists to participate in the camp. While interacting with the camp participants, these individuals also worked with the camp staff to further their knowledge and understanding of Native American culture and the issues facing native peoples.

In 2005 Joseph Marshall was invited to the camp. Mr. Marshall is man of many talents. His book, The Lakota Way, has been used for the past three years as the basis for the daily reflections of the camp staff. The Lakota Way introduces the human virtues important to the Lakota people written as short stories.

In 2006, Jim Yellowhawk and his wife Ruth were invited to the camp. Jim is an artist who often uses Native Americans on motorcycles as the basis for his work. Jim and Ruth worked with the staff and campers to explain the nature of many of the images found in Jim's art work.

In 2007, Kevin Locke joined us to share dancing, story telling and music. Kevin taught many of the audience members hoop dancing, much to the delight of everyone involved.
