Cultural ExchangeJoseph Marshall
Storyteller, teacher, actor and historian, Joseph Marshall is a Lakota author who grew up on the Rosebud Sioux Indian Reservation in South Dakota. His first language is Lakota and his "primary inspiration was my maternal grandfather, Albert Two Hawk." says Mr. Marshall. He has published a variety of books on his culture and life philosophy such as: The Lakota Way Winter of the Holy Iron On Behalf of the Wolf and the First Peoples The Dance House: Stories from Rosebud The Journey of Crazy Horse When the World Ended at the Little Bighorn For children: How Not to Catch Fish: And Other Adventures of Iktomi Walking with Grandfather: The Wisdom of Lakota Elders Some of his books are available on audiotape through Sounds True, Makoche Records and Highbridge Audio. Mr. Marshall also adapts screenplays and does on-screen roles for television. He was an actor, technical advisor and cultural consultant for the series, Into the West (by TNT/Dreamworks) in 2005. He also appeared in Return of the Wolf, How the West was Lost and Return to Lonesome Dove. Today he makes his home in the Santa Fe, New Mexico area when he is not traveling around the globe sharing his Lakota history and heritage. Mr. Marshall visited the Hau Kola Summer Learning Camp in 2005 where he presented a lecture to the local community, shared his Iktomi stories with the Lakota campers and guided our camp leaders and youth in developing a deeper understanding of the Lakota way of life.
